How does balcony solar work?

You can start generating your own electricity without owning a house with a large roof. Panels on a suitable balcony convert sunlight into electricity, and an inverter makes it usable by appliances in your apartment. When you use this locally generated power, you need less electricity from the grid at that time. This can help reduce your electricity costs.

  • Generate your own electricity in an apartment
  • Potential to reduce grid electricity use and costs
  • Optional small battery to keep some energy for later

Where can it be used?

  • Flats
  • Apartments
  • Suitable balconies
  • Homes without access to roof space
  • Starting small with your own electricity generation

Who is it for and what is required?

Balcony solar may suit flats and apartments with an appropriate balcony, including homes where a conventional rooftop system is not possible. Installation depends on the technical conditions and requirements that apply at the location. We assess the structure and mounting, panel orientation, shading and electrical installation before choosing a system.

Less grid electricity, lower costs

Appliances in your apartment can use solar electricity in place of some grid power. Actual savings depend on system capacity, panel orientation, sunlight, shading, electricity consumption in the apartment and how the generated energy is used. Whether a battery is installed also matters. We assess the potential to reduce costs after reviewing these conditions.

Choosing a small battery

Balcony solar can be extended with a small, appropriately selected battery where the chosen system and local technical requirements allow it. Storage can keep some electricity that is not used straight away for later hours. Selection includes equipment compatibility, a suitable installation location and the balance of generation and consumption. Financial value needs an individual assessment.

Two system options

With or without battery storage?

Option 1

Balcony solar

A simpler system for generating electricity and using it directly in your apartment. Without a battery, energy is best used while the panels are producing it.

Option 2

Balcony solar with battery storage

A suitably selected small battery can store some electricity your apartment does not use straight away and make it available later, for example in the evening. This option requires a compatible system and compliance with local technical requirements.

What happens to surplus electricity?

Energy for now and later
  1. Balcony panels
  2. Surplus to the battery
  3. Electricity for your apartment

What can a small battery offer?

  • Use more of your own electricity in your apartment
  • Keep some energy available for later hours
  • Potential to reduce electricity drawn from the grid
  • Make better use of balcony solar production
  • Panels and storage working as one system for your apartment

Benefits depend on available generation, consumption and system specifications. A battery is not always financially worthwhile and does not provide complete independence from the grid.
