Selecting a heat pump
A heat pump uses energy from the surroundings and electricity to heat a building. With suitable configuration, it can also provide domestic hot water. Selection is based on heat demand, insulation and the temperatures required by the heating system, for both new buildings and heating upgrades.
- Heating selected for the building’s heat demand
- Potential to provide domestic hot water
- Solar integration considered in the system design
Where can it be used?
- Detached houses
- Business premises
- New buildings
- Heating upgrades

Building and heating system
We assess compatibility with underfloor heating or radiators, the installation location and hot water requirements. Equipment capacity must suit the building. Running costs depend on factors including insulation, flow temperatures, settings and electricity prices.
Heating controls
Temperature and system operation are managed through the controls provided for the chosen unit. Automation and the number of heating circuits depend on the design and equipment. Commissioning includes appropriate settings and an explanation of how to use the system.
Heat pumps and solar panels
A heat pump can work with solar panels and, where compatible, battery storage. On-site generation may cover part of the electricity used for heating. The share depends on the season, operating times and building demand.
